Scale of the Cosmos
The Local Neighborhood
The Solar System is our cosmic backyard, consisting of our star, the Sun, and everything bound to it by gravity. This includes the eight planets, dozens of dwarf planets, and millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.

Legendary Vessels
Apollo 11
The spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin formed the American crew that touched down in the Sea of Tranquility.
Voyager 1
Launched in 1977 to study the outer Solar System. It crossed the heliopause in 2012, becoming the first human-made object to enter interstellar space. It carries the Golden Record.
Hubble
Launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and remains in operation. Free from the distortion of Earth's atmosphere, it has captured some of the most detailed visible-light images ever made.
Pioneers of the Void
The brave individuals who pushed the boundaries of human potential.
Yuri Gagarin
On April 12, 1961, he became the first human to journey into outer space, completing one orbit of Earth aboard Vostok 1.
Neil Armstrong
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Commanded Apollo 11 and took the historic first steps on the lunar surface.
Sally Ride
An American astronaut and physicist. Born in Los Angeles, she joined NASA in 1978 and became the first American woman in space in 1983.
Carl Sagan
Astronomer and science communicator who popularized astrophysics. Assembled the Voyager Golden Record to communicate with extraterrestrial life.
Cosmic Phenomena
Black Holes
Regions of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothingβno particles or even electromagnetic radiation such as lightβcan escape from it. The boundary of no return is called the event horizon.
Nebulae
Giant clouds of dust and gas in space. Some nebulae come from the gas and dust thrown out by the explosion of a dying star, such as a supernova. Others are regions where new stars are beginning to form.
Pulsars
Highly magnetized rotating neutron stars that emit beams of electromagnetic radiation out of their magnetic poles. This radiation can be observed only when a beam of emission is pointing toward Earth.
